Wednesday, February 11th, 2009

We’ve been following the saga of Beck’s “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat” cover here for awhile. So I just wanted to point everyone to the tribute album’s Myspace page… where you can stream the whole album:

Deluxe Albums

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

On the tail of Odeluxe which was pretty cool, though didn’t quite meet the promise (original version of “Debra”? Hello? Where’d that go?), I’d heard rumor of a few other deluxes too. And it appears two are on their way:

First we got MoGuLuxe, which doesn’t appear to have any new music, just new packaging and some videos? Probably some b-sides too I guess. But even more exciting is, One Foot Deluxe, fully expanded to over 30 tracks!

No tracklist yet, but it seems very possible to me that this will include the legendary recordings for the Second K Album Which Never Happened… songs like “Piss On The Door” and “Mattress“. I know that Beck.com had listened and put the lyrics to 4-5 of those songs up a few years ago, so Beck must have them somewhere. Other than those, I’d imagine the It’s All In Your Mind single is a must, and maybe a few of his other loose tracks too.

*fingers crossed*

Beck Covers Dylan “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat”

Tuesday, January 13th, 2009

So recent press releases about a new charity project have hit the webz. We, of course, already knew about it, since last September. But to sum it up, this project had a bunch of superstar legends each personally ask a favorite artist of a younger generation to cover one of their songs. Bob Dylan asked Beck to do “Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat. ”

I’m dying to know, did Dylan just call Beck up personally and Beck said “hell yes, sir!” Regardless, Beck and his current main music man Brian Lebarton went into the studio and cooked up a nice bluesy version of the Dylan song, mixing a little electronica into the song too. Beck than promptly began playing the song live through the fall.

Heroes, the name of the CD project, goes to support children around the world adversely affected by war, so be sure to buy it on February 16.

LA People: Deep Sea Diver show

Wednesday, January 7th, 2009

To those of you in the So Cal area: Beck’s guitarist, Jessica Dobson has her own band, called Deep Sea Diver. They are playing a show on Thursday night at the Silverlake Lounge at 10pm. She asked us to spread the word, so hopefully it will be a full and fun show.

[Edit: Jessica’s email said 10pm, but her MySpace bulletin said 9:30pm. So come early anyway, you don’t want to miss her!]

The Silverlake Lounge, to make this even more Beck-related, is around the corner from where Beck recorded that argument that begins and inspires “Truckdrivin Neighbors.” Beck played the Lounge himself in a post-show show with Wounded Cougar in summer of 2006.

Modern Guilt Chocolates!

Wednesday, December 17th, 2008

Just in case you haven’t seen this yet, there was a video for “Modern Guilt”:

I assume many may have already known this video, but wanted to share it as a lead in to these great looking Modern Guilt-inspired holiday chocolates. They were made by the lovely Yukari, and I wanted to share them with everyone! :)

The Beck Oeuvre #17: Arabian Nights

Tuesday, December 9th, 2008

“Arabian Nights”! Classic Beck Vultures weirdness. I wanted to point everyone to the interview Beck did with Andre 3000 and Big Boi of Outkast, where he said this song was inspired by them. I couldn’t find it on the web though: here’s the relevant part which I’d quoted over on Ghost:

“I’m gonna send you a B-side that I did a couple years ago that was very influenced by ATLiens. It’s called “Arabian Nights”.” He then said it was his tribute to them.

I’m still waiting for Beck and Outkast to collaborate!

Newtron

[15:50:58] arabian nights: i always wish this was the song from aladdin
[15:51:03] Oh I come from a land, from a faraway place
Where the caravan camels roam
Where it’s flat and immense
And the heat is intense
It’s barbaric, but hey, it’s home
[15:51:16] Arabian nights
Like Arabian days
More often than not
Are hotter than hot
In a lot of good ways
[15:54:34] actually this song’s pretty badass as it is. just not as badass as aladdin
[15:55:14] it taught us all about lazer vizaginal rejuvination

Ghost:PICTOGRAM TIME!

Next up: “Are U Positive?”!!

The Beck Oeuvre #16: Aphid Manure Heist

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

“Aphid Manure Heist” is that goofy karaoke thing in the middle of Stereopathetic Soulmanure. I don’t know who sings it–I don’t think that’s Beck. The music sounds canned. Anyone have any idea where the phrase “aphid manure heist” might come from? The lyrics are all wrong too, it’s a cover of a Waylon Jennings song called “Amanda.” Enjoy that!

Beck On KCRW Tuesday November 18 11:15am PST

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

Beck, who has been appearing on KCRW since 1993 with just about every album release, will be stopping by Morning Becomes Eclectic on Tuesday at 11:15am. The note says he will be playing “solo and acoustic” as well as DJing some tracks. Pull some mid-90s trickery on us, Beck, and drop some brand new unheard songs!

The Beck Oeuvre #15: American Wasteland

Friday, November 14th, 2008

OK, sorry for the break–I was out of town for six weeks. Thought I could maybe continue to manage this at nights, but turns out, working for a Presidential campaign takes up all your time. :) Anyway, we’re back. Sort of… “American Wasteland” did not really inspire the BeckFreaks.

Vitamin.Deb:

I don’t remember which one it was, but after one of the L.A. shows earlier this year Groove asked Ghost how it was and he said “Beck played Devil’s Haircut.” I had to laugh, because although I’m sure it wasn’t his intention, in my mind his joke validated my opinion. WHICH IS. That I am sick sick sick of “Devil’s Haircut.” Yeah, I said it. I never tire of hearing Loser or Where It’s At, but for some reason I can just barely stand to listen to DH anymore, recorded or live. It’s the only song I skip on Odelay. ALL THAT SAID – I love this remix. It infuses the song with a megaboost of energy and then when it’s over – as the DJ notes – we’re ready to move on to the next song. Ohhh, yeah.

AlmostAGhost

Ha! Well I guess I have to respond to that. I do have a love/hate relationship with “Devils Haircut.” It is my favorite Beck video! It is the lead-off track on my favorite album of all-time! It is so cool. But I also like to mock it, for Beck playing it at every single show he does, and it always sounds exactly the same. And sometimes I just skip it when I listen to Odelay, just like Deb. It is always there. (“Where It’s At” doesn’t bother me at all; I look forward to it at all the shows I go to.) So I am sometimes unfair with “Devils Haircut.” And then at those Nokia shows I just went to, I’m not exaggerating… “Devils Haircut” was one of my 2-3 favorite songs of the 2nd night! Sounded amazing! Rocked so hard. The riff was so perfect, and all those little bass turnarounds. So I make no sense with the song, I’m inconsistent and a hypocrite. I hate it. I love it. Anyway I should save more of this rant for “Devils Haircut” when it comes up.

“American Wasteland”–I find this remix so mysterious. I don’t know who that is sampled at the beginning. I don’t know whose idea it was to make this song a pure punk rock blast of energy. I don’t know if a band played the song, or if it was remixed somehow on a computer to get that way. I could probably look this stuff up in the liner notes, but I like the mystery.

Ooh yea! “Aphid Manure Heist” is up next!

Club Nokia Show #2

Tuesday, November 11th, 2008

I would say the second night at Club Nokia was pretty similar in quality, but different enough in setlist to make it worthwhile. If I had to choose, I liked the second night better, even though the opening act (Jay Reatard) was completely off the mark (i.e., lame). Regardless, Beck came out and opened up with “Where It’s At” — a unique choice to open with, I don’t recall that happening before. It’s great for a show to start with those chords! “Pay No Mind” was tonight’s “Hollow Log,” a short acoustic thing Beck tossed out that was not on the official setlist. Surprisingly, “Devils Haircut” may have been my favorite song of the night. Beck introduced “Star Power” as “we’re going to cover a Sonic Youth song,” and they pretty much nailed it. He also said this was his last show of the year.
