International Fresh Meat And Old Slabs Week

Monday, December 17th, 2007

So, the other day I played Fresh Meat And Old Slabs for the first time in ages.  And I immediately declared it International Fresh Meat And Old Slabs Week. What does that mean?  I don’t know.  But if you are newer to Beck, it is a good time to download this old gem of a tape.  (You can do that at the BeckHub, instructions here–though use this address instead of the one listed: dc://becktabs.homelinux.org:1411 ).

These old tapes were what really made me a Beck fan.  Back in the day, you could easily get all the CDs, but what joy it was to get on old Beck fansites (Truck’s and Slo-Jam Central and Comat0se’s disco) and read about these tapes and songs.  There was a Beck mailing list too that made connecting with people and actually getting a copy of these tapes.  This spirit has definitely carried on to Whiskeyclone.net here and the group of us who regular the hub.

Fresh Meat itself is a very good collection of songs. Culled from a bunch of sessions/tapes such as Golden Feelings and Don’t Get Bent Out Of Shape, Beck reportedly put together this bunch of songs as a collection for his mother for her birthday. A few copies were distributed–I believe by Bibbe herself–and copies quickly spread among collectors. As a collection though, the tape is fantastic. It runs the gamut of weird tape experiments, hilarious folk songs, heartfelt blues, and lots of little sound interludes. Most of all, Beck shows his early folk/blues mastery with many of his early favorites: “Mexico,” “Heartland Feeling,” and different versions of “Satan Gave Me A Taco,” “Leave Me On The Moon” and “Hollow Log” than you’re probably familiar with. Fun! Not to mention my personal favorite Beck blues, “Going Nowhere Fast.”

My compass is spinning like a gambling wheel
It takes a hideous misfortune for to tell how I feel
Goin’ nowhere fast

I’m sick to my skin with silence and doom
I’ll break my back, I’ll cry on the moon
Goin’ nowhere fast

What great verses! If you do have this tape, give it some play this week. Post your thoughts/rememberances/feelings below.

from the basement – december 15th

Thursday, November 29th, 2007

i’m not sure where the dates came from, but according to ROSEMINT cafe Beck’s episode of Nigel Godrich’s From the Basement should be available December 15th.

From The Basement is a music series that features the most intimate live performances from the finest musicians on the planet.

From The Basement launched with special performances from Thom Yorke, The White Stripes and Kieran Hebden & Steve Reid. Beck, Jamie Lidell, The Shins and Jarvis Cocker have all shown the appreciation too with exclusive performances for future transmission. Filmed in high definition with live sound by producer Nigel Godrich, and with no host and no studio audience, From The Basement sets a new standard for music TV production.

Beck on new SNL CD

Friday, September 7th, 2007

Beck’s performance of ‘Nausea’ on SNL is going to be on a new CD. The disc, Live From SNL! Performances From Saturday Night Live is going on sale Sept. 9, exclusively at Target.

Two things bother me about this. First, September 9 is a crazy-ass date to release a CD; they normally come out on Tuesdays in North America. Second, ‘Clap Hands’ from the same show was way awesomer! That’s what should have been included, screw Nausea’.

I also heard recently about some new SNL music DVD, but I’m too lazy to look for that right now. Anybody else hear about this? Is Beck on it?

Tracklist:

  1. Avril Lavigne – Girlfriend
  2. Kelly Clarkson – Since U Been Gone
  3. Foo Fighters – Best Of You
  4. Arctic Monkeys – I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor
  5. P!nk – Trouble
  6. Beck – Nausea
  7. Dave Matthews – Save Me
  8. The Shins – Phantom Limb
  9. The Strokes – You Only Live Once
  10. Maroon 5 – Harder To Breathe
  11. Franz Ferdinand – Take Me Out

My Summer News

Tuesday, August 14th, 2007

Hello, sorry for the lack of updates, but Beck’s been quiet.  But there’s a few new things to note here.

 1. “Timebomb”–a song Beck has played live a few times–will be a digital single soon, according to the .com.  No word on when exactly, or where (probably iTunes, as Beck’s album covers are all over iPod commercials).  Hopefully there will be b-sides!  “Timebomb” is a fun song.  There will also apparently be a 12″ vinyl version too.

 2. So for a while we’ve heard about the Deluxe 10th Anniversary version of Odelay.  It has not happened, and it has been 11 years since Odelay was released.  But I’m told that Odeluxe is still being worked on, and a release is still planned.  Stay optimistic!  (There’s also plans for another deluxe version of an older album, but I can’t tell you which one quite yet!)

 3. Beck recently put up a nice tribute to Jeremy Blake on .com, and promises a tribute to Ingmar Bergman soon.  I guess there is a reason to go to beck.com now!  Keep using the site for things, Beck.

 4. Beck’s been in and out of the studio for the last few months, doing different things.  I posted about some of them before on here.  It is still, as usual, up in the air what will come out and when.

5. Also Beck’s band has released an album (Beck’s not on it).  They’re called Wounded Cougar, and you need the record.  Even if you are not interested in hard rockin’ facemeltin’ heavy metal, you probably do want to support a bunch of amazing musicians putting out their own records completely independently.  Go to their myspace for info on how to get the record.

Sunday, April 22nd, 2007

The NME is reporting that Beck will be included on a new charity compilation due out in May. His contribution will be Black Tambourine.

Kaiser Chiefs, Weezer and Beck are among the artists to feature on a brand new compilation CD put together by Lily Allen collaborator Mark Ronson.

Wolfmother, Ryan Adams and Scissors Sisters are also included on the CD, which is the first of a series of compilations put together by Ronson for Hard Rock Hotels.

The album which is released in May will also donate a dollar from each sale to the Water For Life charity an initiative from artist Jay-Z with the mission to bring clean drinking water throughout sub-Saharan Africa.

Please find attached details of the forthcoming limited edition BECK print which will be going live on www.productofgod.net on 1st May. Product of God is an online gallery selling limited editions from the world’s leading graphic artists and illustrators.

Best known for their music design work, Big Active has created award winning album imagery for a variety of bands including Snow Patrol, Keane, Athlete, Basement Jaxx and Goldfrapp.

Most recently their groundbreaking work for Beck’s latest release ‘The Information’ has attracted much attention as a result of its collaborative nature. The poster is printed on self adhesive stock and features over 100 individual kiss-cut stickers selected from those originally commissioned for the album package by Big Active. The stickers themselves have been created by leading graphic artists and illustrators including Kam Tang, Jasper Goodall, Michael Gillette, David Foldvari, Jody Barton, Vania Zouravliov and Genevieve Gauckler,

UPDATE: Sorry for all the little tiny updates, but I just wanted to say that a lot of the other prints Product of God has are by the same artists who did info stickers, and some of the prints are very closely related to info sticker designs.

masterpieces liquidate in fertile tears

Thursday, March 29th, 2007

According to our friends at Hambeck (original post / English translation), Beck has added a show at the Liquid Room! Some of you may have known about this, but it was news to me. This is exciting because Beck’s last performance at the Liquid Room, in 2003, is widely considered to be one of the best Beck concerts (or at least recordings) ever. Seriously, it’s an amazing show, you have to hear it. The Liquid Room is a small venue that holds about 1000 people, and Beck often comes alive in smaller settings like that.
Will this new show be as good as the last? Hopefully some Japanese fans will record it so we can find out!
