deluxe cockroach telling me what’s real

Thursday, February 8th, 2007

Hi everyone.

I have some exciting news for you. Most of you have probably already heard that a deluxe version of The Information is coming out soon (Feb 27 in North America). It’ll have the international bonus tracks, a bunch of remixes, homemade videos for all the songs except O Menina, and two studio videos.

Last year, though, we kept hearing news about a deluxe 10th anniversary edition of Odelay coming out. When 2006 ended without official word of the rerelease, many of us gave up hope of seeing it. Well, it’s back, baby! HMV Japan has a page up for the rerelease! There’s not much information there, other than a release date (April 4) and the fact that it’ll be 2 CDs. Hopefully we get official confirmation and a tracklist soon. And hopefully there’s some new stuff on there that we haven’t heard before.

(Thanks to my favourite Japanese Beck blog HamBeck for linking to this.)

Hi,

I just noticed there were a bunch of comments awaiting moderation by us that hadn’t gotten through. I’ve put them all through now and I’ll try to keep an eye on it in the future. Sorry if you’re comment was affected, and hopefully this won’t discourage all y’all from posting more and letting us know your thoughts.

2006 Year in Review

Thursday, January 4th, 2007

It may be a little bit late for this, but who doesn’t enjoy a good year-end review? 2006 was a good year for Beck fans, so I’ve put together this list of all the new Beck stuff that was released or discovered last year. For all the non-commercially-released stuff, make sure to head over to the BeckTabs hub, your Mecca for Beck earcandy media. (I can’t believe I wrote earcandy. I apologize.)

Keep in mind, this list is leaving out a whole mess of great concerts, club gigs and TV appearances, not to mention videos, puppet shows, t-shirts and lots of other great stuff. You can find a lot of that on the hub, too.

(On a personal note, I saw Beck perform three times in 2006, tying with 2002. Yeah, me!)

Roger Joseph Manning Jr., who has played on Beck’s albums and in his touring band, remixed Beck tracks, and generally kicks ass outside of the Beck world, has been posting a series of videos giving a tour of his various equipment. He’s just posted the latest one, In the Stu-Stu-Studio Part 3. Go check them out at YouTube.

steve had a big commotion

Hey kids,

Steve Moramarco (who you know from Bean and Beck’s song Steve Threw Up) is playing a solo show at Tangier Restaurant in Silverlake next Friday (July 7). Steve points out that they serve dinner and it’s a great place to take a date. Steve’s a cool guy, so you should go check him out if you’re in the area.

Also on the bill are The Kids of Widney High and The Frequency. Tangier is located at 2138 Hillhurst Ave. (between Los Feliz and Ambrose) Los Angeles CA 90028. They serve dinner there – a great place to take a date! (323) 666-8666

Steve Moramarco has played in a lot of bands over the years. His folk/punk duo HILL OF BEANS had an indie hit with “Satan, Lend Me a Dollar” which was recently featured on the Showtime series and soundtrack “Weeds.” Power pop group BEAN had the distinction of sharing a split 7″ with Beck, pre-Loser days. Then there was HORSEPOWER, his short-lived porn film soundtrack band that wrote the title tracks to such cinematic masterpieces as “Transsexual Blvd.” and “She-Male Slut.” His ten-piece “Soul Punk Swing” band THE ABE LINCOLN STORY is finally finishing a new CD. Oh yeah, his Sunset Junction bad-acid trip is forever immortalized in Beck’s “Steve Threw Up.” If that gets you up off the couch, then you are a sick person truly in need of some help. But fortunately, help is on the way for you via his thought-provoking-and-bowel-cleansing music and lyrics, which he will perform solo-style.

Steve @ 8:45
The Frequency @ 10:45 — but call to confirm showtimes

By the way, I did an interview with Steve awhile back. Check it out here.

Sound Scene Revolution has a podcast up with an 8-Bit interview. 8-Bit, of course, made the Ghettochip Malfunction remix of Hell Yes and the Gameboy/Homeboy remix of Qué Onda Guero. They discuss the Beck mixes about 2/3 of the way through the interview.

This interview is most definitely not safe for work. At all.

Beck released a self-titled video compilation on the iTunes Music Store today. It includes the 21 videos below for $2.29 each, or the whole shebang for $24.99 The album notes read:

Beck’s use of strikingly off-kilter imagery — touched by flashes of humor and marked by deconstructed pop culture references — has made him one of the music world’s foremost surrealists, whose promo video work with Michel Gondry and Spike Jonze has exploded the possibilities of the genre. iTunes is proud to present this collection of Mr. Hansen’s videos — ranging from frantic early work, like “Beercan,” to the most recent videos for “Girl” and “Hell Yes.” You’ll also get video footage of Beck performing two of Sea Change‘s finest moments, “Guess I’m Doing Fine” and “The Golden Age,” live.
