Original Performance: Bob Dylan
Written by: Bob Dylan
Lyrics:Blowin' In The Wind [Version (a)]:
from Dylan's original:
How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?
How many seas must the white dove sail before she sleeps in the sand?
Yes and how many times must the cannonballs fly before they're forever banned?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind
Yes and how many years can a mountain exist before it is washed to the sea?
Yes and how many years can some people exist before they're allowed to get free?
Yes and how many times can a man turn his head and pretend that he just doesn't see?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind
Yes and how many times must a man look up before he can see the sky?
Yes and how many ears must one man have before he can hear people cry?
Yes and how many deaths will it take 'til he knows that too many people have died?
The answer, my friend, is blowing in the wind
The answer is blowing in the wind
The Song:"Blowin' In The Wind" is, of course, a Bob Dylan song. It is on his album
The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan, and pretty much is the song that made him famous. (
Wiki)
Beck covered it live once (see below).
Live:Played live once:
October 3, 2008Beck and the band MGMT played a joint show on the radio in Chicago. Since Chicago is the Windy City, they played a whole series of cover songs, all about the wind. :)
Unfortunately, the show does not appear to circulate.
Notes:
- Over the years, Beck has not covered as much Dylan as one might expect. However, they have many of the exact same influences (Hank Williams, blues, folk, etc.). They're cut of the same cloth, for sure.
Beck covered "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat," for a covers album. Dylan himself asked Beck to do it. Dylan also has asked Beck to open a tour for him, but Beck had to turn him down because he was recording. He did open one show for Dylan in 1997, and shared a bill at a festival once in 1994. Also Dylan spun "Devils Haircut" once on his radio show! :)
Live, Beck covered "Blowin' In The Wind and "Idiot Wind" (at the aforementioned Wind Show). Also, at that festival mentioned last paragraph, Beck played this.
Also, an old home tape, Beck + Dava, has a couple of Dylan covers, "Country Pie," and "I Threw It All Away."
