This is a cool show, I like it. It's pretty chill and laidback, and the crowd is totally respectful and non-rowdy, which really gives the whole thing an interesting aura. They do pick it up and rock a bit after the first 11 songs, but I loved the first 11 as a whole. (I guess it was set up that way; they take a few minute break after "Tropicalia.")
Beck announces a "new version" of "Sissyneck," which he says was born 2 shows ago in Osaka. This arrangement of the song only lasted for half this short tour of Japan. Basically, it's a soul song, not the usual honkytonk funk. It's an interesting change, but I'm not sure it has the full effect that they intended.
"O Maria" and "One Of These Days" make a very cool combo, and I think this is probably as epic a "One Of These Days" as they've played. Took them a few tries to get it down, but they definitely have it tonight.
After a short break, Beck and the guys come back out to rock for the 2nd half of the show. The rock half is pretty solid, though not as notable. I mean, even the "Where It's At" is just 4.5 minutes long, no long funk ending, no crowd involvement, nothing. Same with "Debra." Everything sounds good, they're just played pretty straight. (Not counting "Diamond Bollocks," of course, which, even played straight, is insane.) (Also not counting "Devils Haircut" which descends into feedback craziness. This is a totally surprising way to end a Mutations show!)
