Notes:
Beck is the announced headliner for the third day of the 2013 Newport Folk Festival. I'm surprised he hasn't played this legendary fest before!
Setlist confirmed by me, as the whole set was live streamed online by NPR. Yay! Sound quality was incredible too, as great as I've heard on any live stream like that. Thanks NPR!
It was a fun terrific show, clearly tailored for the folk music crowd, and very similar to the two acoustic shows Beck did in the days before. The Song Reader songs felt right in place, especially the Carter Family-ed up "Dollar Bills." So did the acoustic blues stomp of "Fourteen Rivers."
On the "Farmboy Breakdown," Andrew Bird played fiddle! (As well as another fiddler, Annalisa Tornfelt, and Chris Funk on banjo. Both are in the band Black Prairie, and Chris is in The Decemberists.)
After "Farmboy" (which Beck declared didn't really have a name, but that's how we know it around here from Banjo Story), Beck commented how much he enjoyed Ramblin' Jack Elliott who had played earlier in the day. He reminisced briefly about seeing Jack play in the '80s. Then Beck and his band and Andrew, Annalisa and Chris, started "Waitin' For A Train." Part way through, Ramblin' Jack rambled on out and sang a verse and duetted with Beck! Beck you could tell was surprised by this, as well as very touched and happy.
