The Song:At Home with the Groovebox is a sort of novelty concept album. A Groovebox is a compact programming synthesizer containing sounds from various sound machines (the 808 & 909 drum machines, the 303 bass machine, and a sound library). The idea of the album's producers was to send this box/instrument to artists who would then figure out how to use it to create a song/recording. They were only allowed to use the Groovebox, external effects, and human voice. Other artists on this interesting and fun CD include
Air,
Sonic Youth, and Cibo Matto.
With his Groovebox, Beck turned out a a funky, weird song. It could probably be considered the little brother to "
This Is My Crew," it has a similar vibe. DJ Swamp is the star of the song, while Beck samples his own vocals to say "Boyz!" over and over.
