Lyrics:Untitled [Version (a)]:
Gas station on a Christmas moon
Shot my rifle in the ladies' room
Broke the sink and I cracked the mirror
Kiss the deputy till he disappeared
Now I work on a county farm
Shoot every man that's done me harm
Leftovers of boiled wine
Man, I'm thinkin' of that woman of mine
But she can't make my bail
She throws my letters in the garbage pail
Puts my love on the window sill
Last meal when I'm over the hill
The judge put me in the ditch
Brochures and a wooden bench
Nail fevers in my cell
And the dreams of an oil well
Pasttimes of the funeral night
Insects dance around the light
Heart pain on the asphalt sky
Burnt feathers when I'm out of lies
The Song:This song was released on a KXLU compilation album. KXLU is a Los Angeles radio station that really supported Beck in his early days (like a lower-profile KCRW). Was this song recorded at KXLU? I'm not sure.
It is a solo acoustic performance, so it might have been cut live at the station, but a ton of overdubs have been added to the song. There's lots of strange effects, and what sounds like a sitar. Beck doubles some of the vocals. The end result is a sort of lo-fi
Odelay outtake. It's a slow country/folk song at the core, but with a collage-like recording to give it much flavor.
