This show was billed as "Beck & Friends." His friends were most of his Odelay tour band, plus some of the country-ish musicians who had joined him recently at Farm Aid and on The Tonight Show (Jay Dee Maness, Billy Payne & Gabe Witcher).
You can see the setlist there, and just how unique it is. "Redball Special" is a little country hoedown instrumental, that Beck and the band had a blast with, jokingly returning to it between songs a number of times. The giant center of the setlist, I think from "Ella Speed" all the way to "One Foot," was done solo acoustic.
I never know if it is because I am biased because I was there, but this show is legend. It was my second Beck concert. By this point, after all his crazy Odelay touring, Beck had become a pretty big star. To see him at the small El Rey playing these low-key songs was both an utter joy for the fans there, but you could tell, as a sort of way to come down after all the touring. That said, I'll always remember the joy when they finally did break out into "Jack-ass," a bigger song, yes, but fit perfectly, and the crowd by that point was longing for a little bit of Odelay at least. :)
The bootleg that is out there floating around is of terrible sound quality. My understanding, though, is that Beck actually has a great recording of the show himself in his archives. My dream is for it to be released some day officially.
