After playing all summer in 1995 with Sonic Youth on Lollapalooza, and then going to Australia on the Summersault Festival tour with them in January, Beck joins them again--opening the first 10 shows of their My So Called Tour in Europe, all as a solo acoustic set. Sonic Youth truly was an integral part in increasing Beck's success, and truly helped bring up his rep from goofy "Loser" guy.
After "Pay No Mind," I guess someone requests "Mexico" and Beck says it's too long-winded and he doesn't remember all the verses. So he plays something else. But then he gives it a try! He sings two gorgeous verses, and then stops, saying it's just too long to keep going. "Maybe I'll tell you the rest of the story later on in the show," he notes.;
He then follows with a tense "I Get Lonesome," a real slow burn of a "One Foot" (best ever?), a poetry reading of "Call Me Beck," and only one of two known "Buried Alive"s.
He then does three more verses of "Mexico"! He won't leave the audience hanging like that. Then he does a few more songs, finishes "Mexico" (adjusting it to some local food places, I think), and then previews "Lord Only Knows" in a beautiful folk version.
Beck just sounds great on this show, a very confident folksinger at the top of his game, just a few months before Odelay dropped. Wish there were more boots of this tour.
