Lyrics:
Are U Positive? [Version (a)]:

While lying in my bed listening to my motivational tape,
I was looking for a stress-free environment.
My attitudes are changing for the better!
I feel confident about my ability.
I feel confident about my career.
I feel positive about my direction.
I feel positive. I feel positive.
I feel positive. I feel positive.
Positive positive positive!
Are you positive? Are you ready for the positive people?
Are you positive? Are you ready for the positive people?

I got my low-sodium diet. I got my rowing machine.
And my salary is gradually increasing.
I'm stimulated by informative articles!
My tires are all fittin' in.
There's a place in my bureau where I keep my dry cleaning ticket.
I take my medication and I'm feelin' really positive.

I'm feelin' really positive. I'm feelin' really positive.
I'm feelin' really positive. I'm feelin' really positive.
Are you positive? Are you ready for the positive people?
Are you positive? Are you ready for the positive people?

Are you ready? Are you ready for the positive?
Ready for the positive? Ready for the positive?
Ready for the positive? Ready for the positive?
The positive? Ready? Positive!

The Song:

Wow. Beck's lyrics are often tongue-in-cheek ("I'm a loser, baby..."), but this hits new levels of irony. Especially when you're aware of Beck's pre-success life, struggling, living in a shack, mini-mall jobs. "Are You Positive?" may not have the depth and layers of "Cancelled Check" or "MTV Makes Me Want To Smoke Crack," but it is of a similar time and place and feeling. My favorite aspect of the song is how Beck sings these lines about being positive in such a rough, weary vocal so as to completely undermine all the words.

Note that Beck sings of the "positive people" in "Cyanide Breath Mint"!

This song was discovered on a tape of stuff, usually referred to as The 1992 Demo.
