Lyrics:
Why Can't I Believe In You? [Version (a)]:

One time I knew a pleasure so few
Needless to say, that time has gone away
You were too kind to be so cruel
Why can't I believe in you?

I remember when you were my friend
You eased my mind, but you burned it in the end
Pieces of chain cool in the rain
Why can't I believe in you?

Will you still need me when I get weird?
Give me time when time is drawing near?
What can I say when you're laughing that way?
Why can't I believe in you?

The Song:

This pretty song begins with a lonesome, melancholic intro that is similar to those of "Gettin' Home" or "Hollow Log." Beck sings the song in a heart-being-torn-out waver. Listen to how he attacks the "but burned it in the end" line. His lengthy harmonica cries after the second verse add to the emotion and intimacy. Some of the lyrics are a bit awkward, but once again Beck is showing off his folk/blues skills at an early age.
