Lyrics:
Like Being Born [Version (a)]:

My father promised me roses
My mother promised me thorns
My father taught me to use my mind
My mother taught me scorn
He touches me lightly with his hand
It feels like being born
It feels like being born
It feels like being born

My father promised me green trees
My mother promised me stars
I hardly see the love I have
It all goes by so fast
He kisses me gently with his lips
It's near what once was far
It's near what once was far
It's near what once was far

My father promised me roses
My mother promised me thorns
My father taught me to use my mind
My mother taught me scorn
He touches me lightly with his hand
It feels like being born
It feels like being born
It feels like being born

The Song:

"Like Being Born" is one of the songs Beck co-wrote with Marianne Faithfull during some recording sessions in the spring of 2001. This, "Sex With Strangers," and a cover of "Nobody's Fault But My Own" are on Faithfull's album, Kissin' Time, which was released in early 2002. Faithfull wrote the creepy Greek tragedy words, and Beck put them to music. The music does have a slight Mutations-y touch to it.
