Lyrics:
My Hat's On The Side Of My Head, Same As It Ever Was [Version (a)]:

Fancy thing what love can do
Take a little look at me
Yesterday I was so blue
Bluer than the deep blue sea
Now I'm singin', whistlin' a tune
All the live long day
If you want to know just why
I can truthfully say

I've got the funniest feelin'
It was somethin' you said
You've got me walkin' on the tip of my toes
And my hat's on the side of my head

All of my teachers are ?
You're my needle and thread
You've got me walkin' on the tip of my toes
And my hat's on the side of my head

Oh! That wonderful smile
Oh! I felt from the start
You should listen awhile
To the thump thump thumpin' of my poor old heart

We've got a wonderful future
One that's rosy and red
You've got me walkin' on the tips of my toes
And my hat's on the side of my head

The Song:

In order for it to feel more authentic, Beck filled out his Song Reader book with song fragments and melodies, as well as fictional album collections and made-up album titles. "My Hat's On The Side Of My Head, Same As It Ever Was" is listed as part of the album, Songs Of The Hill Country - Sacred And Native American Melodies.

Many, if not most, of the song titles on the back of "Saint Dude" are references to older sheet music/songs. And this, as odd as the title may be, is one too, though it appears that Beck or his art directors added the "same as it ever was" to it.
